Bangladesh bans rallies in Habiganj amid fears of political clashes

Authorities in Bangladesh imposed Section 144 across Habiganj municipality after rival political groups announced programs at the same place and time, raising fears of clashes.

District Magistrate GM Sharfaraz issued the order after the National Citizen Party announced a protest rally and roadside meeting. Local Bangladesh Nationalist Party units and the Habiganj District Chhatra Dal called counter-protests and sit-ins.

The order bans gatherings of five or more people, rallies, meetings, demonstrations, sloganeering, picketing and other activities that could disrupt public order. The restrictions will remain in effect until further notice.

Habiganj deputy commissioner said police requested the measure.

“Several political parties were scheduled to gather in the same area, creating the possibility of an unpleasant situation. We imposed Section 144 to prevent any untoward incident and ensure public safety. So far, the situation has remained peaceful,” he said.
