Floods destroyed thousands of hectares of crops in Bangladesh. Vegetable prices quickly climbed.

Floods have destroyed summer vegetables worth Tk140.82 crore (approximately $11.37 million) in southeastern Bangladesh, disrupting supplies and driving up prices in Chattogram markets.

Flooding from July 6 to 18 damaged 6,591 hectares of vegetable fields in Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar, affecting 63,875 farmers, according to the Department of Agricultural Extension.

Vegetable prices increased by Tk20 to Tk50 per kilogram (approximately 16 to 40 cents). Green chilies reached Tk240 per kilogram (approximately $1.94), while tomatoes sold for up to Tk140 (approximately $1.13).

SM Nazer Hossain, vice president of the Consumers Association of Bangladesh, alleged that traders were using the floods to justify increases despite supplies from unaffected regions.

Overall crop losses reached Tk309.17 crore (approximately $24.97 million), affecting 150,080 farmers across 28 subdistricts.
