Charges accepted against Sheikh Hasina, 40 others over Shapla Chattar attack

International Crimes Tribunal Number 2 has accepted formal charges against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and 40 others over their alleged involvement in the attack on Hefazat-e-Islam supporters at Shapla Chattar.

The proceeding has been registered as International Crimes Tribunal Bangladesh Case Number 6 of 2026. Prosecutors requested an expedited trial, with the next proceeding scheduled for August 16th. The month was not specified in the information provided.

The prosecution alleges that Hasina and members of her Cabinet met to plan an operation preventing Hefazat supporters from remaining at Shapla Chattar. Police forces were allegedly placed on standby before the crowd was surrounded and attacked around midnight.

Evidence submitted to the tribunal includes Bangladesh Police Medal awards given to officers for their roles in dispersing the gathering. Prosecutors contend that the official descriptions connected to the awards document police involvement in the operation.

The accused include additional deputy inspector general MM Mehedi Hasan, Mohammad Harunur Rashid, Biplob Kumar Sarkar, Syed Nurul Islam, superintendent of police Asaduzzaman, Shibli Noman and former Motijheel police station officer-in-charge Forman Ali.
