Border Guard Bangladesh and local residents stopped three alleged attempts by India’s Border Security Force to push 22 people across the border early Saturday, according to local media reports.
At the Bhaighar border in Dinajpur’s Birampur upazila, Indian guards tried to push nine people into Bangladesh, prompting a tense standoff. As the Indian force increased its presence around 6 a.m., villagers carrying sticks joined Bangladeshi border guards. The group was forced back into India.
In Jhenaidah’s Maheshpur border area, guards and residents stopped six people from crossing near Samanta. They remained about 30 yards inside India from the zero line.
At the Sripur border in Feni, a routine patrol stopped seven people at the zero line.
Residents said they were prepared to risk their lives to prevent illegal entries. Border guards later calmed tensions.
