Speaker of Parliament Hafiz Uddin Ahmad assumed the responsibilities of acting president Friday after President Mohammed Shahabuddin formally submitted his resignation.
Hafiz announced the development during an afternoon press briefing at the Jatiya Sangsad, saying Shahabuddin had delivered the resignation letter directly to him.
“The president has submitted his resignation letter to me. In accordance with Article 54 of the Constitution, I have assumed the responsibilities of the president,” Hafiz said.
Hafiz said he had already taken the required oath to perform the duties of acting president when he was sworn in as speaker. He said he would carry out the responsibilities of the presidency under that oath.
Deputy speaker Kayser Kamal, chief whip Nurul Islam Moni, attorney general Ruhul Quddus Talukder and senior Parliament Secretariat officials attended the briefing.
