President Mohammed Shahabuddin may resign soon as discussions surrounding his departure intensify, according to media reports citing government and political sources.
A source familiar with the matter said a decision could come within days, although authorities have not determined when Shahabuddin might step down or who would succeed him.
Government dissatisfaction reportedly increased after intelligence agencies learned that Shahabuddin spoke with former prime minister Sheikh Hasina while receiving medical treatment in London in May. A senior Bangladesh Nationalist Party leader said the reported conversation was not the only factor, describing the situation as “more complex.”
Shahabuddin took office on April 24, 2023, and is the last top constitutional officeholder appointed before the 2024 uprising.
Under the Constitution, the speaker of Parliament would serve as acting president. Parliament must elect a replacement within 90 days.
