A Bronx man was sentenced on Thursday to 15 years in prison for fatally shooting his uncle in Bangladesh in 2021 during a dispute over family property, federal prosecutors said.
Ganet Rozario, 54, a naturalized U.S. citizen originally from Bangladesh, previously pleaded guilty to one count of foreign murder of a U.S. national in the killing of Michael Rozario, his uncle and a fellow U.S. citizen.
According to court documents and statements read in court, the two men had been involved in a years-long dispute over a family home in Munshiganji, Bangladesh, where both were staying during a visit in June 2021.
Prosecutors said Ganet Rozario was outside the home smoking a cigarette near his uncle’s bedroom window on the night of June 11, 2021, when he overheard Michael Rozario insulting him from inside the house.
Authorities said Ganet Rozario became angry, went back inside to retrieve a shotgun and returned outside. After shouting words to the effect of “you will not see the sun tomorrow,” he fired a single shot through an opaque window shutter, striking his uncle in the abdomen and killing him.
Federal prosecutors said Rozario later returned to the United States in July 2023. He was indicted in New York in April 2024.
