Bangladesh on Saturday inaugurated a riverbank development project in Sylhet valued at about $420 million, aimed at addressing chronic waterlogging and river erosion while improving the city’s landscape.
Prime Minister Tarique Rahman laid the foundation stone and formally opened the Surma River Bank Development Project in the Chandnighat area.
The project, estimated at roughly 46.35 billion taka, will include beautification efforts, walkways, green spaces and modern flood protection infrastructure along both banks of the Surma River.
During the ceremony, Rahman reviewed progress and planning details and instructed officials to complete the work on schedule while maintaining construction quality.
Sylhet City Corporation officials said the project is expected to reduce waterlogging and erosion while creating new recreational areas and improving commuting options for residents.
“Once completed, Sylhet should no longer face waterlogging issues even during heavy rains,” said Rahman.
It’s not entirely clear when the project will be completed.
A public gathering followed the ceremony at the same location, where officials discussed the project’s future plans and anticipated impact on the city.
