West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee congratulates Tarique Rahman. Bangladesh Nationalist Party secures majority.

West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee on Friday congratulated Bangladesh Nationalist Party chairman Tarique Rahman after his party won an absolute majority in the 13th National Parliament Election.

In a message posted to her verified X account at 1 pm, she referred to him as “My Tarique Bhai” and extended “hearty congratulations” to “all the people of Bangladesh.” She also offered advance greetings for Ramazan and said she hoped relations between Bangladesh and India would remain cordial.

West Bengal and Bangladesh are home to the Bengali people.

The election and a national referendum were held Thursday, with voting from 7:30 am to 4:30 pm before counting began.

The Election Commission released results from returning officers overnight and completed the announcement Friday morning, confirming the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s majority.
