Unofficial results for 296 of 299 seats in Bangladesh’s 13th National Parliamentary Election show the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its alliance winning 212 seats, positioning the party to form the next government.
Results were released by returning officers after Thursday night’s vote count. The 11-party alliance led by Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami won 70 seats, while other parties and independents secured 14 seats.
Party officials say BNP chairman Tarique Rahman is expected to become prime minister, the first male to hold the office since 1990. Historical records show that the position has been dominated for more than three decades by Begum Khaleda Zia and Sheikh Hasina. With a majority confirmed, attention now turns to cabinet formation and the transition of power.
