Sir Mark Tully, the former British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) correspondent whose reporting during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War became a vital source of information, died on Sunday in New Delhi at age 90.
His colleague Satish Jacob confirmed the death to the BBC Hindi Service. Tully’s coverage of the nine-month conflict brought global attention to the humanitarian crisis and the resilience of the Bengali population.
Born in Kolkata, he later spent decades covering South Asia and led the BBC bureau in Delhi for more than 20 years. Bangladesh awarded him the Friends of Liberation War Honor in 2012 for his contributions during the country’s birth.
His death prompted tributes in Bangladesh and India, where he was widely respected for his reporting and insight.
