A 5.7-magnitude earthquake on Friday knocked at least 1,100 megawatts of electricity off Bangladesh’s national grid after six power plants tripped offline, officials said.
The largest single loss came from the 660-megawatt first unit of SS Power, owned by S Alam Group, which shut down instantly. A second 600-megawatt SS Power unit also disconnected, deepening the supply gap. Combined-cycle power plants, known as CCPPs, at Bibiyana, Ashuganj and Sirajganj were among those affected. Damage to insulators, busbars and breaker bushings left all major 230-kilovolt, 132-kilovolt and 33-kilovolt lines tied to the Ghorashal substation unenergised, limiting rerouting options.
The Bangladesh Power Development Board, or BPDB, said it restored 200 to 250 megawatts by afternoon, with repairs ongoing.
