Yunus says Hasina verdict shows no one is above the law in Bangladesh

Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus said Monday that the death sentence handed to ousted Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina marks an important step toward accountability after last year’s deadly July uprising.

“The verdict delivered by the Bangladesh court today is echoing across the country and the world,” Yunus said. “It reaffirms a fundamental principle: no one is above the law. The ruling brings limited justice for the thousands harmed during the July 2024 mass uprising and for the families still carrying those wounds.”

Yunus said an estimated 1,400 people were killed when security forces used lethal force, including helicopter fire, against unarmed student protesters. He said Bangladesh must now rebuild public trust and strengthen democratic institutions as it moves forward.
