Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) vows to reintroduce Islamic phrase in Constitution

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed on Friday said his party would restore the constitutional phrase “absolute trust and faith in Almighty Allah” if returned to power.

Speaking at a Khatme Nabuwat Parishad rally at Suhrawardy Udyan in Dhaka, he told supporters the proposal would be taken up in Parliament “if Allah is willing” and if the public entrusts the BNP with governing.

The phrase, introduced under martial law in 1977 and reinforced by the Fifth Amendment, was removed after a 2010 court ruling. The 15th Amendment in 2011 reinstated Bangladesh’s original four state principles, including secularism.

Salahuddin also addressed calls to label Qadiyanis as non-Muslim, saying such legal changes would require national unity.
