Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has drawn criticism for accusing former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of abandoning her people, while his own party’s acting chairperson, Tarique Rahman, has lived in exile for nearly two decades.
Rahman fled to the United Kingdom in 2008 after facing corruption and criminal charges in Bangladesh. Though Fakhrul said Hasina’s flight proved her “lack of attachment to her people,” critics note Rahman has not returned since. He is expected to fly back to Dhaka in December to lead the BNP’s campaign for the upcoming election.
