Firearms stored at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport were looted after a devastating October 18 fire destroyed much of the cargo complex, officials said.
Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the airport’s cargo handler, discovered the vault’s lock broken on October 28, three days after warning authorities about security risks. Weapons from at least 13 consignments dating back to 2019 were stolen, including pistols, shotguns, rifles and ammunition.
Police have recovered 67 pistols, 12 shotguns, one rifle and 991 blank cartridges, but many weapons remain missing. Biman has filed a general diary over the theft as police continue investigating the airport’s worst security breach in years.
