South Asia could add millions of jobs by integrating more deeply into global value chains, according to the World Bank. Greater participation would attract foreign direct investment, increase competition, and raise productivity.
Experts say improved infrastructure, regulatory consistency, and trade facilitation are essential. Countries like India, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka have the labor force and capacity to move up the manufacturing ladder but lack coordination and logistics support.
By linking local firms to global markets, the region could expand exports of higher-value goods and services, creating sustainable employment. Economists warn that without decisive action, South Asia risks falling behind Southeast Asia in the race for global manufacturing and investment.
