A crude bomb attack allegedly targeted student leader and political organizer Abu Baker Mojumder near the Hotel InterContinental intersection in Dhaka’s Shahbagh area on Saturday night, police said.
The explosion occurred around 8:23 p.m. while Baker was heading to a meeting at Rupayan Tower. He escaped unharmed. “Moments ago, around 8:24 p.m., a cocktail was thrown in front of my bike at the InterContinental intersection while I was heading to a meeting,” Baker wrote in a Facebook post shortly after the attack. “For political reasons, I’ve made both external and internal enemies. I’m still fine. Please keep me in your prayers.”
Police detained one person around 11 p.m. in connection with the incident, Deputy Commissioner Ibne Mizan of the Tejgaon division told reporters. Officers from the Ramna division also visited the scene and began collecting CCTV footage, said Deputy Commissioner Masud Alam.
The attack comes just days after Baker became the convenor of Jatiya Chhatra Shakti, a newly formed student organization affiliated with the National Citizen Party. He was previously a key coordinator of the 2024 Anti-Discrimination Student Movement and a prominent figure during the July Uprising that led to the fall of the Awami League government.
Authorities said an investigation is underway to determine the motive and identify others involved in the bombing.
