A string of three major fires in five days has raised serious concerns about Bangladesh’s emergency preparedness and oversight, with authorities struggling to contain a massive blaze at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport’s cargo village. The fire, which took seven hours to control, destroyed imported goods, disrupted flights and stranded passengers. Industry groups estimate damages from the airport blaze could exceed $1 billion.
Officials have been accused of poor coordination during the response, as airport authorities initially hesitated to accept outside assistance. A former aviation director said the cargo complex lacked a functioning hydrant system, despite earlier fires at the same site in 2013 and 2017.
“The Interim Government is aware of public concern regarding some major fires in several locations across the country. We wish to assure all citizens that the security services are investigating each incident thoroughly and protecting lives and property with utmost vigilance. Any credible evidence of sabotage or arson will be met with a swift and resolute response,” said Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus. “No act of criminality or provocation will be allowed to disrupt the public life and political process.”
Critics say awareness is not enough, urging Yunus to outline a clear plan to secure key installations and prevent further disasters.
