A massive fire at the Cargo Village of Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka has been fully extinguished 27 hours after it broke out Saturday afternoon, officials said.
Lt. Col. Mohammad Tajul Islam Chowdhury, operations director of the Fire Service, said 37 units contained the blaze by 9:18 p.m. Saturday and declared it fully out at 4:55 p.m. Sunday. The fire spread through multiple steel-structured compartments, which slowed efforts to douse it, he said.
Tajul added the incident might have been prevented had proper detection and protection systems been in place. Smoke continues to rise from heat trapped in the steel structures, though there is no danger, he said. Two government investigation committees have been formed, and significant losses of imported goods are feared.
