Bangladesh’s election authority has pledged to deliver a fully transparent national election as the country prepares to return to civilian rule under an interim government led by Nobel laureate Muhammad Yunus.
Chief Election Commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin said after a meeting with officials in Chittagong that “nothing will be secret” in the upcoming February 2026 general election, the first since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina’s government during the July 2024 revolution. He said the Election Commission is committed to ensuring an open, accountable vote, with overseas ballots and opportunities for electoral staff to cast their votes.
The government is also training about 768,000 law enforcement personnel — including police, Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Ansar-VDP members — to ensure a free, fair, and peaceful poll. Home Adviser Lt. Gen. (retd.) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said the program will conclude by mid-January, equipping security forces to handle election-related unrest.
Nasir rejected calls to shut down the internet on election day, saying, “I want a free flow of information,” and urged journalists to partner in strengthening democracy.
