Border Security Force soldiers in eastern India arrested a man attempting to smuggle gold from Bangladesh through the Bangladesh–India border early Saturday, seizing 20 gold biscuits worth about $340,000, officials said.
The troops from the BSF’s 32nd Battalion received intelligence that an Indian national from Muslimpara village in West Bengal’s Nadia district planned to bring gold into India through the Horandipur border area.
Around 6 a.m., soldiers spotted a man moving behind a dense bamboo grove, surrounded him, and took him into custody, the BSF said in a statement.
A search of the suspect yielded a plastic packet containing 20 gold biscuits weighing roughly 2.33 kilograms (5.1 pounds) and valued at 23 million rupees ($340,000). The man and the recovered gold were handed over to local authorities for further legal action, officials said.
