At least 36 people, including eight children and 16 women, were killed Saturday when a stampede broke out at a political rally for actor-turned-politician Vijay in Karur, Tamil Nadu, officials said. More than 58 others were injured, with dozens hospitalized.
Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced 1 million rupees ($120,000) in compensation for each victim’s family and ordered a judicial inquiry led by retired High Court judge Aruna Jagadeesan. The federal Ministry of Home Affairs sought a detailed report, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured support after speaking with state leaders.
Vijay, head of the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam party, said his “heart is shattered,” though DMK officials accused his campaign of delaying proceedings for drone footage, worsening the crowd crush.
President Droupadi Murmu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and other national leaders offered condolences. Officials warned the death toll could rise as the investigation continues.
