New study shows South Asia’s rivers and glaciers are drying at dangerous rates

South Asia is emerging as one of the most vulnerable regions to freshwater depletion, with new satellite data showing steep losses across its major river basins. The Indus and Ganges-Brahmaputra systems, which sustain hundreds of millions of people in Pakistan, India, Nepal and Bangladesh, are experiencing some of the fastest rates of water decline in the world.

Bangladesh: Downstream and Exposed

Bangladesh sits at the confluence of the Ganges and Brahmaputra, rivers that provide food, fisheries and drinking water. The Ganges-Brahmaputra Basin is losing water at a rate of minus 1.09 centimeters per year, and the pace rises to minus 1.40 centimeters annually when Himalayan glacier melt is included.

For a nation where nearly two-thirds of the population depends on farming, the decline is alarming. Himalayan glacier retreat has reduced the natural buffer that sustains dry-season flows. Excessive groundwater pumping for irrigation has created long-term deficits, while erratic rainfall and reduced river recharge make recovery difficult.

Bangladesh now faces a paradox of devastating floods during extreme monsoons and worsening scarcity in dry months. Scientists warn that once aquifers are depleted they cannot be replenished on human timescales.

India: Shared Stress Across the Heartland

India straddles both the Indus and Ganges-Brahmaputra Basins, placing it at the center of the crisis. In the Indus Basin, shared with Pakistan, water storage is declining at minus 1.23 centimeters per year. Much of the loss comes from irrigation withdrawals in Punjab and Haryana, regions heavily dependent on tube wells.

The Ganges-Brahmaputra Basin, covering northern and eastern India, shows similar stress. Beyond agriculture, it supports hydropower projects and major urban centers, adding to the strain. Some central Indian regions show slight wetting trends, but the national outlook is dominated by groundwater depletion and rising evaporation under hotter conditions.

Pakistan: At the Brink of Water Insecurity

Pakistan faces some of the most severe risks. The Indus Basin accounts for more than 90 percent of the country’s freshwater use and agricultural production. With a loss rate of minus 1.23 centimeters per year, Pakistan ranks among the most water-stressed countries globally.

Heavy reliance on the Indus for irrigation has led to massive groundwater pumping. Glacial retreat in the Karakoram and Hindu Kush further reduces resilience. The consequences are significant: reduced wheat and rice production, increased pressure on rural communities and potential threats to national stability. Researchers describe the trend as robust, meaning it is unlikely to reverse without sweeping reforms.

A Regional Mega-Drying Zone

These basins are part of a larger tri-continental mega-drying region that stretches from North Africa through the Middle East, Central Asia and into South and Southeast Asia. The zone is losing water at rates between minus 0.83 and minus 0.88 centimeters per year, with South Asia at its core.

Groundwater depletion makes up nearly 70 percent of global terrestrial water loss. South Asia is one of the most affected areas. The region is also contributing significantly to sea-level rise. For the first time, continents are adding more freshwater to the oceans than Greenland or Antarctica.

The South Asian Challenge Ahead

The stakes are high. For Bangladesh, India and Pakistan, the decline of shared river basins threatens food production, jobs and economic stability. Nepal is caught in the middle with glacier melt reshaping river flows. Sri Lanka and the Maldives face additional risks from drought and rising seas.

Water management remains fragmented. The Indus Waters Treaty of 1960 is one example of cooperation, but it is strained by today’s realities. Without new policies on groundwater use and cross-border management, the region could face permanent scarcity.

South Asia is not simply affected by continental drying. It is at the very center of it. The shared decline of the Indus and Ganges-Brahmaputra Basins underscores that Bangladesh, India, Pakistan and their neighbors now stand on the front lines of the global freshwater crisis.
