Bangladesh has announced plans to make its health sector self-reliant, signaling a shift in strategy after decades of medical dependence on India. In 2023, between 449,570 and 499,951 people traveled to India for treatment, according to government and media tallies.
Health officials said the country had been “dependent on one country” but is now moving to strengthen its domestic system. Authorities are reviewing a proposal from China to construct international-standard hospitals, while a special civil service exam is underway to recruit additional doctors. Eleven new health facilities have also opened under the Urban Primary Healthcare Services Delivery Project.
The longstanding reliance on India reflects gaps in specialized care within Bangladesh, especially in oncology, cardiology and complex surgery. Reducing the outflow of patients could help retain billions in domestic spending and improve public confidence in local health services. If the China-backed projects and recruitment efforts proceed, officials say the reforms could lay the foundation for long-term resilience.
