The Election Commission has finalized a new code of conduct for the upcoming 2026 general election, banning the misuse of artificial intelligence, social media abuse, and the use of posters, drones, and non-biodegradable campaign materials.
Candidates must submit their social media details to the Returning Officer before campaigning. Hate speech, misinformation, and AI-generated content that manipulates or disfigures individuals are prohibited. Penalties for violations have been increased to six months’ imprisonment and a fine of approximately $1,360.
Plastic-based materials including rexine, polythene, and PVC banners are banned. Each candidate may install a maximum of 20 billboards, each no larger than 16 feet by 9 feet.
Drones and quadcopters are banned during campaigns and voting. Only party general secretaries or equivalent may use helicopters—without distributing campaign materials.
Loudspeakers are restricted to 60 decibels and may only be used from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m. VVIPs, including ministers and MPs, face new restrictions on campaign involvement. The code also allows for cancellation of candidacy upon violation and requires no government approval to take effect.
