India’s clean electricity output has surged by 20% in the first half of 2025, reaching a record 236 terawatt hours, according to Ember data.
Renewables, hydro, and nuclear power together provided a quarter of India’s electricity mix, up from 21% a year earlier, and are expected to exceed 30% during July–September.
Strong gains in wind (up 29%), solar (up 25%), hydro (up 14%), and record nuclear output drove the expansion. This growth allowed utilities to cut fossil fuel generation by 4% to 691 TWh, with coal supplies down 3% and gas-fired output falling 34%.
June marked a milestone as clean sources accounted for 31% of generation, pushing fossil fuels below 70% for the first time.
Analysts say India may be nearing peak fossil reliance.
