Bangladesh appoints new ambassador to the United States

Bangladesh has appointed Ambassador Tareq Md Ariful Islam as its next envoy to the United States, filling a position that had been vacant since former Ambassador Asad Alam Siam became foreign secretary.

Ariful Islam, a career diplomat from the 17th batch of the BCS (Foreign Affairs) cadre, joined the service in 1998. He currently serves as Bangladesh’s permanent representative to the U.N. offices in Geneva, a role he assumed in June 2024 after serving as ambassador to Sri Lanka.

His previous assignments include postings in New York and Kolkata. He holds a master’s degree from Monash University and a civil engineering degree from BUET.
