Advocates also say news organizations have a role to play. Outlets are being urged to implement safety protocols, conduct risk assessments and provide protective equipment for reporters covering volatile situations such as political rallies or mob incidents. Additional measures include secure transportation, legal assistance for detained journalists and access to trauma counseling.
International groups such as the Committee to Protect Journalists and Reporters Without Borders have warned that protecting journalists is not only a human rights obligation but also essential for defending the public’s right to information.
