A powerful earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan late Sunday, killing at least 812 people and injuring more than 2,800, according to the Taliban-run government.
The U.S. Geological Survey said the 6.0-magnitude quake hit about 17 miles from Jalalabad, with damage reported in Nangahar, Konar and Laghman provinces.
Rescuers ferried survivors to Jalalabad Airport as villages reported collapsed homes and landslides hampered relief. Entire communities were destroyed, witnesses said, and authorities deployed civil defense, medical staff and troops to the area.
The disaster strikes as Afghanistan faces a worsening humanitarian crisis. Nearly half the population relies on aid, but the United Nations says its relief plan is only 28 percent funded, leaving millions without adequate food or medical support.
