As U.S. tariffs strain India’s economy, pressure is mounting on Prime Minister Narendra Modi to stabilize relations across South Asia.
Indian foreign policy expert Sreeradha Datta, speaking at the Bengal Delta Conference in Dhaka, argued that Bangladesh and India must engage in “honest and frank” dialogue centered on national interests rather than historical grievances.
Ties have been strained since the fall of Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government, but Datta noted that post-election both countries have an opportunity to reset. She called Bangladesh “an extremely important neighbor” and urged New Delhi to focus on trust and reciprocity.
With Washington tightening the screws, Modi may see value in easing tensions, using cooperation with Dhaka and others to secure stability and regional economic integration.
