The Bangladesh Army said its intervention in Kakrail on Friday night was unavoidable after police failed to quell violent clashes between Jatiyo Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad activists.
The confrontation, which began in front of the Jatiyo Party central office, escalated around 8 p.m. with torch processions, stone-throwing and attempts to set fires, disrupting nearby areas.
Police officers came under attack, prompting a request for army support. The Inter-Services Public Relations directorate confirmed five soldiers were injured. Gono Odhikar Parishad claimed 50 of its activists were hurt, including leader Nurul Haque Nur.
Authorities reiterated a zero-tolerance policy toward mob violence.
Bangladesh must prosecute and impose heavy penalties on those involved in the Kakrail violence, while also establishing a system to track politically sanctioned unrest and hold both party activists and their leadership accountable. It appears this seems to be part of the culture of Jatiyo Party and Gono Odhikar Parishad. This culture of political violence must be stamped out in the New Bangladesh.
