A nationwide surge in influenza cases has pushed Bangladesh into its worst flu outbreak since surveillance began in 2007, according to health officials. The spike, recorded in July, has caused widespread illness across the country, particularly among schoolchildren and families.
The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) and icddr,b reported that 59.2 percent of 2,455 patients at 19 hospitals tested positive for influenza last month. This is more than double the rate recorded during the same period last year.
Experts say influenza is now a leading cause of seasonal viral fevers, adding to ongoing challenges posed by dengue, chikungunya, and Covid-19. They recommend preventive measures such as wearing masks, avoiding crowds, and maintaining hygiene.
Most flu cases do not require medication, but older adults and people with chronic conditions are advised to seek medical attention if symptoms worsen. Health officials expect cases to decline by October.
