Seven months after Bangladesh’s July 2024 uprising, many protesters remain missing, with reports of hasty burials in unmarked graves, tampered medical records, and families denied access to their loved ones’ bodies. An investigation by The Daily Star examined 31 cases: six bodies were buried as unclaimed at Rayerbazar graveyard, four were identified by families from charred remains in Ashulia, two were returned after DNA tests, and 19 remain missing.
Eyewitnesses and documents suggest systematic efforts by security forces to cover up deaths. Reports indicate that many bodies were removed from hospital morgues before families could claim them. Some were allegedly shot and tortured before being dumped in mass graves. The UN and human rights organizations cite testimony suggesting deposed Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina ordered security forces to target protesters and conceal evidence.
The crackdown intensified from July 17 to August 5, with protests erupting nationwide and authorities enforcing curfews and an internet shutdown. Families of victims struggled to locate their loved ones amid a surge in unaccounted bodies. Hospital records, burial registers, and police documents reviewed by journalists indicate that normal protocols for handling unclaimed bodies were bypassed. Some reports even allege that bodies were burned to destroy evidence.
Despite government promises to investigate, bureaucratic delays have hindered efforts to identify the dead. DNA testing is ongoing, but many families remain in limbo, unsure whether their missing relatives are dead or still being held. The lack of official accountability has left families demanding closure, even as unmarked graves at Rayerbazar continue to decay.
